York Monolith Proposal
A collaboration with Arup

It is proposed to erect a monolith at the edge of the River Ouse adjacent to North Street Gardens
to create a landmark that reflects both the current context and historical background.
It is proposed to install the monolith in the River Ouse adjacent to North Street Gardens. It is
expected that the monolith would form the focus for the regeneration of this area.
The design concept is to raise a monolith which would rise from the River Ouse to a height of 9.5
metres above modern ground level. The monolith would be rendered in a contemporary material,
incorporating an abstract design which rises and metamorphoses into a suggestion of the Roman Numerals
LXXI 71 AD - the year that Eboracum was founded and therefore the first recorded date in the history
of the city.
