Serpentine Gallery, Kensington Gardens, London
A collaboration with Ian Hamilton Finlay
Commissioned by Serpentine Gallery as part of the refurbishment of the gallery and
grounds 1997. Work comprising a large & complex inscription ( 3.4m diam.) at the
gallery's entrance (executed with Andrew Whittle), eight benches and a tree plaque all
in Caithness stone. Each element of the work is inscribed with pastoral poetry. The paved
entrance circle contains the names of trees found in Kensington Gardens and a quotation
by the philosopher Francis Hutcheson, 1725
In conjunction with the completion of the work & the re-opening of the gallery a
limited edition printed and bound copy of the proposal with finished drawings of all
inscriptions was published by Wild Hawthorn Press
