Textus, Wellington Place, Leeds, 12th-26th October 2007

Textus - latin [a web; texture, structure]; of speech or writing, [connection].

Animated projection onto The Lifting Tower of the former Leeds Central Station in celebration of the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Leeds Charter. Coinciding with Leeds Night Light and running for a further two weeks. A multi layered text based on the latin of the charter animated by Paul Emery creating a random, ever changing kaleidoscopic cypher.

The Lifting tower, now an anachronous structure stood alone amongst new development, was used to load & unload trains that passed its upper storey on a viaduct which now exists in only in derelict remnant some distance away. It is surrounded by the new developments of West End Leeds and imagined future buildings such as Lumiere Tower, which will soon rise beside it. Thus the Lifting Tower looks both forward & back, back to the Industrial Revolution and the transport hub of which it was once a part and forward to inclusion (by virtue of its Grade 1 Listing) in the regeneration of the West End of Leeds and central to the MEPC development site.

The project was developed as part of NESTA Fellowship working with Arup Leeds, Paul Emery, MAAP, Lumen & MEPC.
